The Poetry of the Socially Anxious #3

Mostly,
over socialization drains me,
like coke frozen overnight,
BAM! The explosion of faces
makes me appear normal on the outside,
while inside the bloating has
hollowed
what was once enthusiastic
bubbling triumph,
to emptiness with sticky residue

The Poetry of the Socially Anxious #2

I lived in the shadows,
most of my life

Not the dark corners,
where,
drug dealers
and convicts hide,
just those grayish areas
where you'd rather remain,
unseen

Not out of loneliness,
friends were always
by the handful,
nor lack of agenda,
life goals fill an expandable
notebook buried
deep in the shadows,
unknown

An embarrassment,
perhaps,
at unintelligible chatter,
being translated by the
naked ear as me, with an IQ
much lower than accurate,
true knowledge, unseen

Yes, but then,
shadows became
maddening, and true self
tried to win,
standing in the light,
standing out,
meeting so many new faces
shrouded by too much sunlight
that
it's hard to remain in the light
unseen

The Poetry of the Socially Anxious #1

There are ways to battle social anxiety, namely by socializing... I just wanted to take a moment to ponder this uphill battle.

A party bus,
bound for a 70's themed
excuse to emboozify,
to mummify strangers into
companionship,
doors shut me out

New "friends"
ride into the night,
"catch the next one,"
they call,
tears strike
as alone in the dark
in an unfamiliar campus
with shoes that cut me,
I succumb to
the safety patrol bus,
which takes me home

The only safe place,
always home.

Crowds,
since the beginning
unnerving,
four or more people,
whether known or not
shut me down,
shut me out,
make it impossible to utter
complete sentences,
only phrases,
then tears strike

stupid, shy, snobby,
a smorgosboard of "s" words
destined to describe me.

The only safe place,
always home.

Newspaper splatterings,
and social network murmur,
friendings and minglings,
people who've met you,
but don't remember

Loneliness,
never my only friend,
always one or two or three
or ten, on which to "depend,"
progress
has no rules that match
the quick tick of time,
one day splendid,
the next day fine,
but without exception,
soon the need to hide,
shut them out,
cry.

The only safe place,
always home.

A film premiere,
meant for me,
200 some people,
the actresses, a few friends, family
the after party,
just an appetizer room
with wine,
heavenly wine,
no one mingled with me,
even though the film, it was mine
17 days straight, I worked until I almost died,
and my only friend was myself that night.

doors shut me out,
which takes me home,
always home,
then the tears strike,
destined to describe me,
always home,
don't remember,
cry,
always home,
and my only friend was myself that night.

Challenge 3: March - A Musician/Band a Day #7

I listened to Alice in Chains' album Dirt this morning twice through while I was going through some boxes in my spare room. I mean, it was mostly noise. Nothing stood out. To each his/her own, yes?

I started to listen to my next selection Harmonium by John Adams. It's an interesting concept... orchestral and choir arrangements based on famous poetry by writers such as Emily Dickinson. I was liking it... I'll get back to it tomorrow...

Challenge 3: March - A Musician/Band a Day #6 pt. 2

Drat! I fell a day behind. I've been listening to The Allman Brothers Band since Thursday. The album I've been listening to, At Fillmore East, is tauted as one of the greatest live rock recordings of all time. The recordings were made over the course of four shows at Manhattan's Fillmore East audiorium. I can see why... it's a fun romp. I've found myself tapping my toes and hands along as I work and clean to this... I can't choose which ones to star, because they're all good.

Next up... Alice in Chains' Dirt...

I'm listening to The Allman Brothers Band's album At Fillmore East. I'll report more in the morning...

Challenge 3: March - A Musician/Band a Day #5

So today I listened to an Ethiopian musician. You really can't say that everyday. Well, I suppose you could, but I really doubt you do. I listened to Mahmoud Abmed's album, Ere Mela Mela. I have no idea what any of it meant, but I loved it. According to Don Moon in his book 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die, from which this challenge originated, the album's title song is about a faraway love. Whatever it's about, it got a star from me, as did a few other songs on this album. I'll listen to this again, and maybe figure out what some of it means...

Challenge 3: March - A Musician/Band a Day #4

Yesterday, I listened to Shakin' in the Rafters by The Abyssinian Baptist Choir.  I suppose I shouldn't have listened to this while reading a strange YA fantasy novel, right? It felt like too stark a contrast. I mean, it was gospel and it was upbeat, and I starred the song "I Want to Ride that Glory Train."

Today, whenever I was writing, rendering, or reading I listened to Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker. I was cheating a bit, because I've heard Ryan Adams before. I love his sound. I decided this could count, though, because I hadn't listened to this album, or at least, not all the way through. I'll probably star the whole thing, but the standouts right now are, "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, is to Be High)" and "Oh My Sweet Carolina."

Challenge 3: March - A Musician/Band a Day #3

Yesterday I listened to the album Blu Blu Blu by The Muhal Richard Abrams Orchestra. When I first started listening I enjoyed it, but as I played it later in the day as a background track to reading, I found it agitating. Then, I don't care much for Jazz... It had a lot of unique sounds, though, I'll give it that.

Tonight, I'm listening to the album Shakin' in the Rafters by The Abyssinian Baptist Choir. It's hard not to be drawn into gospel music... so snappy!

Challenge 3: March - A Musician/Band a Day #2

Yesterday I listened to the first recording listed in 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die. It's alphabetical. I was stuck listening to ABBA. The album chosen by author Tom Moon was Gold.

I'll admit that after a few listens it grew on me a bit, but I still don't think I'd go out of my way to listen to most of their material. They're a bit much for me. Still, the author is right, the lesser known hits are much better. I put stars next to: "I have a Dream," "Take a Chance on Me," "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)", and "Thank You for the Music."

Today, I'm listening to the album Blu Blu Blu by The Muhal Richard Abrams Orchestra. I thought I didn't like jazz, but I'm loving this...

Challenge 3: March - A Musican/Band a Day #1

28 days in February, and I wrote 22 poems... Hmm...

It was a good exercise just the same. I'll try to write them more often now. It was really easy to just throw something together first thing in the morning, or to write a few inspired words into my phone's notepad to ponder later. Some of the poems might be a good start for better poems. Others will probably never go any farther than this blog.

This month's challenge is inspired by a book I've checked out about 10 times from the library, and failed to even crack open. It's called 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die: A Listeners Life List. I like the idea of this book, because 1,000 recordings seems like a manageable goal for not a life, but a year. That was, of course, before I realized that it's "recordings" not "singles." I was going to listen to them all this month when I thought it was 1,000 individual songs. Totally doable, right? Then, I realized that was still too much for a month if I was really going to savor every song, so I thought, "Hey, I'll spread it out over a couple months." That would've been 15 songs a day. It was just after this that I opened the book to the first artist and saw that it was "recordings" as in "albums." That blew the whole original idea. Instead, I'll just start working my way through the book and listen to a new album a day. If I run across an album I already know really well, I won't listen to it again or write about it, but I'll mention it in the blog. Fun!

Oh, and in case you're interested, there's a Spotify list that's been created based on this book. I've actually been listening to this from time to time since discovering the book (probably a year or more ago). It's a fun listen if you just want to experience a few new sounds or enjoy some old ones.

Incidentally, I'm listening to the first album right now...

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #22

Nightmare-sparked power outage
breeds caterwauling
and siren chatter,
world sleeping,
unaware

Pierced cold
spins senses,
moon, street, and phone light
symbolize
alone,
awake,
afraid

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #21

Upside down swing queen
Monkey bar child, I once was
The ground is dashing

Sugar sweet with cream
Banana split cherry top
My favorite shirt

Bang! Sky filled with zing
monotonous fireworks crash
Blue wave ocean screams

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #20

Sleep,
my friend that comes
to steal the day,
the one
who,
begs I give it up
until tomorrow,
when,
Sleep
my intrusive companion
disappears
again,
as if daylight
and time for
daily doings
terrify her

Sleep is only concerned
with
ideas
that go no farther than the mind,
the ones
that
when pieced together later
don't add up to a whole
even though they took as
long as a day to
dream up

Sleep is not my friend,
unless it is night
and I have no choice
but to accept her
entice

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #19

I wake up at 2 am and my life is surreal,
like, "Hey Sir, is that real?"
A series of alarms and goals mark my day,
an hour of this, that,
and a night here or there
for free play

The clutter is calmer than lethargy,
though,
the structure
more stable than
free verse

Still,
it all feels off

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #18

Cake,
imploded upon itself
and
burning remnants,
remind me
I'm no Martha

Campy smells
and a snowy outdoors
coming in
to lessen the smoke
tell me
laugh,
don't cry,
sometimes smoke gets in
your eyes

And you forget,
it's a better memory

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #17

In this snowy silence,
A cat breathing and the heater clicking
The sound if the pages turning
And the occasional car rumble far
Out the door
The only noise is in these pages
Or in my own head
It is calm

Wind
White out
Glistening sun swirls
And a gap in the blinds
Created by an inquisitive kitten
revealing snow blowing and a stream of sun
Shadows of its movement
Dance on the other blinds
Ghostly almost

Then quiet
Peace

Challenge 2: February - A poem a Day #16

I have a note that reads,
yellow apron what!!
I don't know what it means
I assume it was Siri,
my phone's computer
interpreting something I said
into a language she understands
like when she says
Cheep-oat-lay instead of Chipotle
sometimes she says,
"I don't know what you mean by..."

Well, Siri
I don't know what you mean by
yellow apron what!!

That idea might be lost.

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #15

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013

Note: Spies were following me in my dreams
they took the cat
he didn't know

Note: Spy music is playing
James Bond, Mission Impossible, that stuff
the spies don't know

Note: Cold coffee,
table strewn with valentine hearts,
Sherlock Holmes, Tales of Hollywood,
and receipts,
that's trackable

Note: Inspiration just struck...
Be back...

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #14

Feb. 18, 2013

I was trying to think of another name for myself
when the doorbell rang,
the cat answered
by running to a cabinet
a hideaway
unknown to most --
   a golden few

She has a point,
we didn't want visitors,
or magazine salesmen

Once,
there was a note to someone who must've lived there
before
us,
a long lost lover was hoping for forgiveness,
but there was nothing to be done,
neither me, nor the cat knew who
Jess was, is,
  could possibly be

The doorbell stopped ringing,
I never answered
she arose from the cabinet an hour later,
and I still had the same name

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #11

Feb. 14, 2013

A reflection....

My childhood
was full of lots of things
that made one believe
life is magical, and
anything is possible

books, butterflies, bug races,
ponies and troll dolls, fairy clouds
and grandparents

My adulthood
was full of lots of things
that made one believe
it's realistic,
and impossible

news vans, overdrafts, bills
empty fridges and coffee cans, OCD
and angry humans

My present, though,
is full of lots of things
that make one believe
life is magical, and
anything is possible

books, kitten faces, movies,
opportunities and connections, comedy
family, friends, and the love my life

Lots of things,
it seems, come back around,

Reality?
Magic?
Possibly.

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #10

I wrote this, because I didn't know what to write, so I closed my eyes and saw images...

Feb. 13, 2013

eloquent dots and dashes
and checkerboards, rest
under eye lids,
to say it's dark back there
is a mistake, of the
visionless

second sight and dragon flight,
just beyond that place,
squeeze tight

circus acrobats and mind pay
and robot airplanes, dance
under eyelids,
where colors just invented
lead, even the
visioless

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #9

February 12, 2013

Be mine...
     Valentine
Red,
    lots of red,
which is ironic,
being that anger and love are the same color

This isn't an angry poem though,
on the contrary,

Browse the cards,
which in fun designs and cute animals
try to quantify
Love

Kisses,
   hugs,
monkeys,
   doves,
cats and dogs,
sweet, dirty, simple,
   shrugs

Be mine...
     Valentine
Hearts,
      lots of hearts,
which is ironic
considering love doesn't really have a shape

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #8

February 12, 2013

"Let's blow this Popsicle stand,"
is
one of the phrases
I say in my head,
in hopes that one day
it will be out loud
while hitting an open road
busting out of this town,
shooting out a few stars
in the process,
but then,

that mountain
   out the window
gigantic, proud, mesmerizing...

how to wave goodbye to it

February 10, 2013 (it snowed)

elegant ice rink

"Curb! curb!" she cries

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #5

I've been working on a documentary, it involves this beautiful castle. I was shooting video of it yesterday, and I was thinking the whole time, "Gosh, I'd love to live in a castle like this." It's really the perfect size -- just grand enough to be a castle, but small enough to be acceptable.

 Feb. 8, 2013

scanning the hillside,
eyes resting on a red stone castle

looming,
   out of place
even in this strange country
of manikin-leg statues and yard tubs,
of tepees and pinwheels

it's brick
   glows fiery
and speaks a tale,
out of grasp,
it beckons

signs scream,
   you shall not pass

but, it's burnt in the mind now,
   look up and it's there
it's red flaming gaze
ghostly,
magnificent

alone on that hillside
   a red stone castle

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #4

Envious of those who can sit and write, and review, and research, and be in the sunshine all day if they choose -- who can shoot photographs, or watch a movie, or paint...

Feb. 7, 2013

envy
the most powerful of drugs
to know it,
is to see
glimpses
of what a life
lived differently
would be

shaken,
from our norm
saying,
"I'd like to live a life like her."
trust,
the vision,
soak it in

envy is the drug,
but to be different

is the cure

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #3

Feb. 6, 2013

society,

have asked us to be,
proficient at all
master of none

the sphinxlike "they"
say we must know this,
but also that,
and to know this is no longer
enough

magnanimous
advice from the wise

trudging forward
at some point
we realize
that society,
with it's master proficiencies
has taken away
our speciality,
originality,
ability to decide
that

this, is enough

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #2

Feb. 3, 2013

Little dust particles going no where,
I used to believe they were fairies.
You can only see them certain times of day,
when the sun streaks through blinds
creating a dashed diagonal,
broken by furniture and walls,
beckoning cold feet and cat tails,
and fairies, it seems
to dance,
going no where,
in the broken beams

In night they are silenced,
save for a flashlight's harsh glare
I wonder if it kills them,
this fake lighted air
cat eyes stare fixed
on something unseen
an elf, a ghost, a monster, a microbe
dances eerily in darkness
no longer the friendly fellows of day,
click the switch,
turn them off
once more unseen

Little dust particles going no where,
I used to believe they were fairies.

Challenge 2: February - A Poem a Day #1

I did fairly well on my last challenge, falling short by only three days of film watching. Since I started a day late into January, I find myself a day late going into February as well. The challenge that I'm setting for myself this month is a bit loftier, because it doesn't just involve watching, but doing. I heard a girl talking about taking part in a "poem a day" challenge once, and I loved the idea. It's taken me a couple of years to attempt it for myself. So, here goes...

Say,
what say you on the subject of
stop lights?
red,
green,
yellow,
go, stop, go
north until you reach your turn
west
'til you reach the next right

Wrong
turn around to a point
until you reach the light again
Say,
does it ever really begin
or end?
stop,
go, go, go,
stop,
no...

What say you
on the subject of stop lights?

Challenge 1: January - A Short Film a Day #28

Another random Vimeo click, which when I first began I didn't think I'd enjoy. The cinematography was beautiful though and the subject was interesting, so I kept watching. Also, I felt compelled to finish because of this challenge. As it turns out, days later I'm still thinking about a few things this guy said. Let him sink in.

This a film by DIY Film Studios for the 100 hour film race. The way this was filmed as one continuous reflection shot is great. I think the special effects are pretty fabulous too. It's definitely a big effort for 100 hours.

I'm fascinated with the idea of a 1-2 minute film, so I Googled "1 minute film." I found this site, and watched almost all of the entries, but... I can't say there's one that I really loved more or less than any other one. It's an interesting idea, though... I might pursue it someday.

Challenge 1: January - A Short Film a Day #9

I chose to watch another random film from indietalk.com today. This one is pretty interesting.

The cinematography is probably my favorite part. I love the time lapses in the sky and trees around 9 minutes in, and the general look of the piece as well. It was a tricky concept, and I think they pulled it off considering.

I'm still not sure about the "waters echo" part with the Gollum voice either. Honestly, I would've gone without that. It was a strong enough piece sans the water voice. Maybe it's just that it sounded like Gollum though.

In any case, I think this film is definitely worth a watch!

In any case, nice job. I really liked it! It was really interesting the way you shot and edited it! The cutting back and forth between both "characters" looking for something was so cool. I'm interested to hear reactions from people who didn't know the story beforehand. I'd been let in on the punchline, so I watched it differently from the get go. Then again, knowing that made me tune into details I may not have noticed on a first viewing, which was also cool.

Challenge 1: January - A Short Film a Day #6

I've been meaning to watch this, because I've been hearing about it for a while. Kudos on the noir look and the awesome locations. This was a bold undertaking. I'm always impressed when people take on period pieces.

Challenge 1: January - A Short Film a Day #5

This is the video I watched today. I found it randomly on Vimeo. I love pen and ink art, and animating fascinates me! This is just mesmerizing! I hope you enjoy it too.

Challenge 1: January - A Short Film a Day #4

I saw this for the first time over a year ago, and was thinking about it again today. I like it just as much as the first time; the poem and the video. It speaks for itself, so I'll let it.

Challenge 1: January - A Short Film a Day #3

Today I watched a film by a friend of mine. I should've watched it right away. My goal in 2013 is to watch things right away. It also stars Cougar who was in my film "Dink" and is a rock star of a Colorado actor and filmmaker. Enjoy!!!! This is a gem! I laughed out loud in so many places!

Challenge 1: January - A Short Film A Day #2

Today I watched this:

...which led me to this:

Umm... These were randomly selected choices from indietalk.com and then YouTube's related videos column. I think that the stop motion on "The Scanner" was interesting and cool. I'm a little bit fascinated by stop motion, though. The Courier... erm... ? The robots were well made. I will say that.

Challenge 1 - January: A Short Film a Day #1

In 2013, I'm going to challenge myself. In the past I've done photo a day challenges and really enjoyed them. I've wanted to do other challenges like write a poem a day or do a sketch a day... I figured why not make 2013 the year of bettering my brain through these challenges, while at the same time putting them out there for you to enjoy.

In my spare time, I make films sometimes, and as a producer I make videos all the time. One of our greatest struggles as small producers, directors, etc. is getting the work out there. I've decided for the month of January to promote someone else's film every day. There are many I've seen that I'd like others to see, and there are many I just keep meaning to watch myself.

This is my first choice. It's by a Denver filmmaker, David Quakenbush. It's very hitchockian and funny, but I wouldn't watch it after you eat. Enjoy my first choice, Worm
